IMABOX

A little too big
for the box.
Imagination + box
Pronounced EE-ma-box
Five characters.
Fourteen feet tall.
Imagination without limits.
IMABOX brings childhood imagination into physical space through five illuminated inflatable sculptures, an immersive sound environment, and augmented reality. Animated heroes become larger than life: bright, winged figures that invite people to gather, look, listen, and play.

Once, the room
felt too small.
Now, the work is.
When I was five or six, I lived in a tiny room in Syria. I told my mother the room was too small for me to grow taller. Years later, the characters I imagined became inflatables too big to fit inside my apartment.
IMABOX grows from that feeling: the desire to move beyond the space you are given. The box can be a room, a border, an identity, or a limit placed on you. The wings are the possibility of leaving it behind.

Artist statement.
IMABOX is a large-scale illuminated inflatable installation inspired by childhood imagination, animated heroes, and the stories that shape us long before we understand the world around us.
Growing up, cartoons and animation played a significant role in my life. Many of these characters spoke different languages, came from different cultures, and existed in different worlds, yet they shared common themes of courage, adventure, friendship, perseverance, and possibility. They became companions, teachers, and heroes, offering ways to imagine beyond the realities of everyday life.
The sculptures draw from these memories. Their geometric, box-like forms reference structure, limitation, and the ways people are often categorized, defined, or placed within boundaries. Extending from these forms are large wings, transforming the figures into something capable of movement, freedom, and imagination. The work reflects on the tension between limitation and possibility, and the belief that imagination can carry us beyond the boundaries imposed on us.
Standing approximately fourteen feet tall and illuminated from within, the five figures create a gathering point for visitors of all ages. Their scale and light invite curiosity, while their character-like appearance encourages personal connections and interpretation.
The installation also incorporates sound. Fragments of voices, music, and sounds inspired by cartoons and animation from different parts of the world emerge and disappear throughout the space, creating an atmosphere that feels both personal and universal. Visitors may recognize some sounds while others remain unfamiliar, reflecting the diverse ways stories and characters influence our lives.
The work celebrates imagination as a force that connects people across cultures, languages, and generations. While each visitor brings their own memories and experiences, many share a connection to the characters, stories, and heroes that inspired them as children. IMABOX creates a space where those memories can resurface and where imagination is recognized not as something left behind in childhood, but as a lifelong source of creativity, resilience, and possibility.
At night, the illuminated figures stand as a reminder that while life may present limitations and expectations, imagination continues to offer new ways of seeing, dreaming, and becoming. While people may encounter labels, expectations, and boundaries throughout their lives, imagination remains impossible to contain. You can box the body, but you cannot box the imagination.

Memory has a soundtrack.
The sound environment by Steve & Danny extends IMABOX beyond its physical form. Voices, music, and fragments of anime emerge and fade into an immersive background, echoing the stories and characters that accompanied childhood across cultures and languages.

Five separate sculptures allow the installation to be arranged in dialogue with each venue. Scale, circulation, sound, power, and anchoring are developed with the host.

Space and anchoring
The original outdoor plan specified a 5 m clearance radius from the centre of each sculpture, subject to site review. Each inflatable has eight anchor points. Ballast, anchoring loads, ground conditions, and public circulation must be confirmed for the venue. Indoor spaces need sufficient clearance above and around the inflated forms.
Power and sound
The technical package lists five 330 W blowers, totalling 1,650 W before lighting. Blowers operate continuously while the sculptures are inflated. The final load must also account for LED lighting, voltage conversion equipment, and audio. Power distribution and circuit capacity are agreed with the host. A coordinated sound system accompanies the installation.
Installation and removal
The planning estimate is approximately 20 minutes to set up each inflatable and 10 minutes to take it down. Additional time is needed for site preparation, anchoring, electrical distribution, final checks, and packing. Crew, transport, access, and schedules are coordinated with the venue.
Outdoor operating conditions
The supplier's documented wind limit is below 10 m/s, approximately 36 km/h, with deflation if winds approach this limit. The installation does not operate during heavy rain, lightning, or severe weather. The host and artist agree monitoring, supervision, and shutdown procedures before opening.
Technical figures are planning information from the 2026 package, not a substitute for a venue-specific installation and electrical plan.
