As a kid growing up in Syria, I had no window to other cultures and sports except Spacetoon, known as Future Youth Channel. Basketball was brought to me by Hassan (Hanamichi) and Fadi (Rukawa), who influenced my and other Middle Eastern kids' childhood. I was fascinated by their personalities, clothes, sneakers, and the very well-made detailed visuals in the show. Shows like Slam Dunk were easily relatable and localized; while watching Hassan and Fadi playing, we saw ourselves as heroes with a narrative that gave us motive, hope, confidence, and pride.
